The brief for a Secondary School IES 3/2 normally requires around 10.000m2 in order to fit all the classrooms and ancillary spaces as well as a comfortable outdoor space and two 44x22m sports pitches. In this case, however, the size of the site was only of 4.750m2. Therefore, the scheme has been largely influenced by this fact and the building has been designed as a very compact volume in order to free as much space around it as possible.

The School is basically composed of two parts. One is a 50 x 26m2 rectangle comprising the ground floor and 2 storeys in which all the classrooms and staff areas are located. The other one is an “L” shaped two storey building, in which we can find the gymnasium, changing rooms, the conference room, kitchen and refectory, all of them built along a canopy. This “L” shaped building is placed giving its back to the surrounding buildings, acting as a natural boundary to the exterior sports area. The compactness of the main building is broken by the existence of a series of two storey courtyards which flood with natural light the interior of the building, as well as a displacement of the built volumes, both in plan and elevation, which allow to model the building to suit the brief as desired at each level.
